Qualities of a Formidable Commander
A leader can be found in many different shapes and sizes, but power and respect on the other hand is challenging to gain. In the famous novel, “Lord of the Flies,” by William Golding, a group of young British school-boys are put on a plane in the midst of a nuclear war. The plane then gets shot down, crashing into an uninhabited island, killing the pilot, who was the only adult. Later, the group of boys who survived the crash gather onto a platform from a noise made by a conch. Furthermore, they all vote on who will become chief and then after deciding, they start to gather food and build shelters. Some of the boys try to stay as civilized as possible, but there are many who chose to be savage like. Although, no matter the amount of say one person has, remaining civilized slowly fades away and evil coming into play. A character that demonstrates powerful leadership is Simon, when he volunteered to walk across the island in the dark to let the one back at the platform they were not coming back that night, having hope in getting rescued when the chief has given up, and lastly, showing everyone there is no other option, but to face their fears head on.
Simon displayed powerful leadership in the situation when no one wanted to volunteer to head back and let the littluns and Piggy know they would not be back for the night. On page 117, Simon responded, “I’ll go [back to Piggy and the littluns] if you like. I don’t mind, honestly.” This quote shows Simon standing up and taking charge of the situation. He is also showing the boys a great role model, because he is not complaining, he is taking responsibility being the mature one to cross the island in the dark while no one wants to. Being considerate of others is pivotal to being a strong leader because without it, all the boys on the island would be lost or even worse, dead. Simon is a commander who is obliging and helps others before helping himself. This form of commanding is rare because those who have power would most likely be hungry for more. Although, Simon is not that type of ruler, he is more of a democrat in the real world because he is immensely concerned about the boys, especially the littluns. He is similar to Woodrow Wilson, who is in fact a Democrat, according to History.com. It states, “[He is the] 28th U.S. President,...[who] led America through World War I [and he] received [a] Nobel Prize for his peacemaking efforts.” This quote connects to Simon, because Woodrow Wilson and him are both leaders who took risks and are kind hearted. When Simon mentions the words, “I don’t mind, honestly.” He shows he is someone who is not bothered when given or volunteering for arduous tasks. Simon’s mentality is not made for survival or the wilderness. In the novel, he is, someone who can be stepped on or taken advantage of, because of his selflessness.
Simon demonstrated formidable guidance when he spoke to the chief in charge, Ralph who had lost all hope of being rescued. On page 111, Simon insisted to Ralph, “You’ll get back from where you came from...All the same. You’ll get back alright. I think so, anyway.” In this quote, Simon gives hope to Ralph by strongly believing that he will be rescued. Ralph had lost complete hope, because the group of boys have been behaving savagely and have not been listening to his demands, such as, keeping an important fire singeing. This quote is important, because it displays Simon being a prevailing individual, to the chief of the group, Ralph. Simon is supporting him because he is lost with all the savagery taking over the island. Simon is an important superior to Ralph’s success, because in order for leaders to rule, they need a person to help guide them. This connects to the real world, because just like Ralph has Simon to guide him, the American Presidents have a White House Chief of Staff. According to New.Mic, “the chief of staff generally works behind the scenes to solve problems… and deal with issues before they are brought to the Chief Executive. [highest ranking employee, President’s private secretary.] What is problematic about Simon in this part of the novel is that he could of effortlessly overthrown Ralph and took the place of chief, by taking advantage of Ralph when he thought he was not fit to lead anymore. Instead, he remained loyal and attentively uplifted Ralph’s self-esteem to confidently lead the group of boys again.
A commander like Simon who displays there are no other options but one, will be seen as a dictator, because he is pushing something others do not want or want to do. On page 128, Simon whispered to the opinions of Piggy, “What else is there to do?” Simon is showing the groups of boys, especially Piggy that now is the time not to back down, particularly because they're all afraid and made it so far enough to find the “beasts” hideout. Simon speaks up, when Piggy did not want to find out who the “beast” was because he was having cold feet, although Simon has the group of boys thinking there is no other option. This quote symbolizes dictatorship, because it shows how Simon is leading the group of boys mentally, into finishing out who the “beast” is. Being able to push something mentally keeping in mind frightened, is a quality that not many leaders have. This quote also shows in a way that the group of boys are at a dead end with nothing other to do. This connects with the real world, because North Korea is dictated, to the point where the people have no say in what they want to do, nor do they have options but of those the dictator has. Simon is being dictator like in this quotation, although it may not seem because he whispered that there was no other option instead of demanding. It is all the same, because Simon persuaded the boys to think there are no other choices to carry through.
When Simon pushed Piggy to not back down when facing his fears, volunteering to go across the island to get to the littluns and Piggy, lastly when Simon inspired Ralph there is still hope to get back from where he came from. Being all considerate, guiding, and dictator like at times, are very crucial to what makes a commander influential. Simon has all these standards, this is what makes him not only a captain, but a formidable one. Leadership comes in all kinds of forms, ranging from virtue to evil. Simon symbolizes Jesus, a leader who was taken advantage of because of his selflessness. Simon leads with concerning of others, who would not want a leader such as Simon, who will always make sure everything is done with caution. One could learn that a leader like Simon who died, is crucial to “Lord of the Flies,” because it helps move the novel forward. Simon’s death is also lesson learning, because Jesus, died for everyone. Simon also relates, because he died in the eyes of all the boys. Therefore, Simon is a commander who had a nice way to lead.
