Prioritizing the Journey
An anonymous person once said, “Life's a journey, with problems to solve, lessons to learn, but most of all, experiences to enjoy.” In “The Alchemist,” by Paulo Coelho, the novel is about a young man named Santiago who is an ordinary shepherd who is unaware of the journey he is going to experience. Santiago goes through a series of characters, who help him realize his Personal Legend. He encounters many obstacles throughout his journey, such as chasing his dream or his relationship. Regardless of the problems, he strives to find his true meaning in life. The journey is more important than the destination, because a journey helps one uncover and gain many opportunities, it provides many lessons to learn, and it helps one better themselves as a person.
The journey is most important than the destination, because one is able to uncover and gain many opportunities. “Journeys are in themselves ‘anti-survival’ even though they must be undertaken to get to a destination.”On page 92, it states, “At that moment, it seemed to him that time stood still, and the soul of the world surged within him…[Fatima was] The omen he had sought to find with his sheep and in his books, in the crystal, and in the silence of the desert.” What this quote means is that once he met Fatima, they taught each other the Language of the World and because of that he found his soul mate. He felt as if she was the missing piece he had been looking for all his life. This quote is important because it confirms my belief that one is able to uncover and gain many opportunities. What this quote shows me about people in general, is that when one is on a journey to achieve their personal legend or a dream, that journey is usually when they find “the one” just like how Santiago found his true love. This connects to the real world because it shows Santiago is just like any other human who tends to fall in love. In reality many people are indecisive as to whether they should choose to continue their dream or stay with their found love. Santiago on the other hand came to a conclusion that he found his love during his journey so he will continue to search for his Personal legend and if the love between them is real, it will never fade away.
Many lessons are learned throughout one's journey. “When we prioritize [the journey]...we have a reason to hold back, to relax, to wander, to be aimless.” On page 31, it states, “As you wander around, carry the spoon with you without allowing the oil to spill...The secret of happiness is to see all the marvels of the world and never forget the drops of oil in the spoon. What this quote means, is to enjoy the “marvels of the world” while reaching your destination. The importance of this quote is that one should not keep their eyes only on the prize, but to their eyes open to see and experience first hand the wonders around them. This quote shows me that many people in general are oblivious to the things happening and coming their way, that they think everyday is just a day same as any other day. This connects to the real world, because many expedite the journey in order to achieve the destination. Thus it leaves one to neglect all they could have learned along the way in the journey. This connects to the journey because along a one it is inevitable to not gain or discover anything.
A journey is crucial because it helps one better themselves as a person. “It [the journey] encourages us to demote direction and embrace a shoulder-shrugging ‘anything goes’ attitude.” On page 137, it states, “What you still need to know is this: before a dream is realized, the Soul of the World tests everything that was learned along the way. It does this not because it is evil, but so that we can, in addition to realizing our dreams, master the lessons we've learned as we've moved toward that dream.” What this quote means is that the universe makes one go through all what they have learned throughout their journey to test if they have “mastered” all the lessons learnt. This quote is important because it explains how the universe evaluates one to see if they have gotten the hang of what they were taught along their journey. What this quote shows about people in general is that some people may become so exhausted of the walls (lessons) the universe is throwing at them, but are still able to get up and keep on going mastering the lessons they were taught. This connects to the journey because during one, some people will grow into a better person than their formal selves.
The reasons why a journey is more important than the destination, is because it is crucial to help one better themselves as a person, to learn lessons ,and to uncover and gain many opportunities awaiting for them.Prioritizing the journey over the destination, will make one not neglect the lessons being thrown at them whether it be problems or solutions. It will help one realize all the opportunities surrounding them, leading their selves to true happiness. Also lastly a journey will, help build a person into a better version of themselves, because many obstacles occur. Either it being mentally or physically because lots of knowledge will be learnt and physical problems will arise on a journey. The reason why people should care about the journey more than the destination, is because the journey is what will give you lessons and first hand experiences that will better you as a person and expand your knowledge of the world. This essay will teach some that life is a box of chocolates where one is enjoying each and every chocolate one by one. If one were to choose the destination over the journey in this case scenario, they would miss out on all the sweetness and the taste swinging flavors of the chocolates. This would happen, because they were aiming to finish the chocolates, not enjoy it. Thus the journey is better than the destination.
