Live Your Own Way
A plethora of individuals face difficulties causing them to question whether they should be part of civilization. There are those in society who prefer to be part of a group while there are ones who want to be left alone. Having the desire to “fit-in” with society can lead to psychological disorders and self-inflicted diseases, such as depression and alcoholism. Though there are perks of being part of a group, as well as developing new innovations and producing major societal changes. Many people face such complications of being an individual or being part of a group in civilization. As a human being, everyone has their own desires. Many long to walk alone, building their own paths without the pressure to impress others, while those who are in groups most of the time being watched. No matter what, happiness is difficult to attain. Being an individual is most important because they have their own freedom to make their decisions, they are likely to have depression due to social pressures, and they do not feel the need to change themselves for the attention or to impress others.
Having freedom over the choices a person has, are one of the many reasons some people choose to stand on their own. In the article, “The Sociology of Leopard Man,” by Logan Feys, he claims in paragraph three and ten, “ … Leopard Man… may not be a hero, but he is free… He lives in solitude.” This quote is explaining that a person does not have to be a huge deal to find their own happiness. They could still live a peaceful life away from civilization by choice. The importance of this quote is for society to realize that many people who choose to stand on their own can also find their own true happiness. For example these people do not face peer pressure because they are not dependent on a group that push them to act in such a way. A person who has freedom over the choices they make in their life, can really determine who they are as an individual. They are responsible for their own actions, whether it be unacceptable or exceptional. Another real life example is from the Huffpost, where a Daniel Marans, wrote an article about Donald Trump claiming for him to be a racist. Although, Trump claims “to be the least racist person that you have ever met.” His actions show the exact opposite, ranging from attacking a Muslim’s Gold Star parents to “claiming a person can’t do their job because of their race.” Trump is perceived to be a terrible example of a true non-conformist because his voters believe that he speaks his mind and pursues what he truly believes in. He has the true freedom to speak his mind.
Limiting the access one has from socially connecting with society lessens the probability of depression. In the article, “Social Media Usage To Depression” by Mit Chowdhry, he claims in paragraph 8 that, “highly idealized representations of peers on social media elicits feelings of envy and the distorted belief of that other lead happier, more successful lives.” This quote explains that social media leads to self-inflicted diseases, such as depression because seeing others with better lives can trigger jealousy and even madness. The importance of this quote us to persuade the readers that social media can lower one's self-esteem. Sometimes not being socially connected boosts one’s confidence because they are not in this case, socially comparing themselves with others. A real life example of social comparison is in the article on The Guardian, about an eighteen year old girl, named Essena O’Neill who seems to have the “perfect life.” Many people who scroll through Instagram may stumble onto her posts and be triggered by emotions, such as envy. They could also grow jealousy towards her and try to conform to society’s definition of “beautiful.” However, the pictures that many people are envious of are actually staged, as she later admits.
Many of those who stand on their own do not feel the need to change themselves to receive attention. In the article, “The Sociology of Leopard Man,” by Logan Feys, he claims Leopard Man “doesn't live for other people's reaction. He lives in solitude.” Feys is pointing out that Leopard man does not live for anyone but himself, he proves this by living peacefully alone and venturing out into society only when he needs to.This quote is important because Feys is explaining that not all “freaks” of society, such as those individuals who are or have radically changed themselves, such as tattoos and hair dyes, are looking for attention. They are able to change without feeling the immense pressure of all the eyes of society piercing through their skin. Lady Gaga is an example of a true non-conformist who does not change to achieve the attention of society. She has stayed with her concept of “craziness” since her first debut. Her styles range from “crazy” dresses with too many accessories to almost exposing her fully naked body. Lady Gaga is confident about herself because she did not once change her appearance nor her song genres to conform to society's standards. She also does not feel the need to change her way of living because she stands as an individual and chooses her personal desires without the intent of attaining society's attention.
In society it is better to be an individual they do not need to change themselves for others, they are likely to have depression due to social pressures, and they have true freedom over the choices they make. Being an individual means having the true freedom over the life one wishes to have, such as radically changing one’s self because they desire to, not because they wish to attract attention of others. Nor are they likely to obtain depression due to social pressure. It is more important to be an individual rather than sticking with a group because one is not held down by their peers. They are truly capable of making their own decisions and can find what honestly makes them joyful. As stated before, happiness is difficult to obtain. People who stand as an individual are less likely to lose their self being, for instance their unique characteristics that distinguishes them from society. They are also able to find themselves in a more productive way rather than putting oneself on hold and allow society's standards bring them down.
